Merivale is joining forces with revered Sydney chefs Mike Eggert and Jemma Whiteman to open a pop-up venue in what is currently the drive-in bottle shop of The Tennyson Hotel. Mr Liquor’s Dirty Italian Disco will launch early October, serving up American-style Italian for a six-month stint.
Eggert and Whiteman, the dynamic duo best known for their run at Woollahra’s Pinbone, have created a short and snappy menu of bruschetta, pasta and wood-roasted meats. “It’s warehouse Italian, very New York”, says Eggert, “fun and fast, simple and delicious”.
Keeping in theme with the original bottle shop experience, guests will be able to walk in and buy their own alcohol, before ordering at the counter and dining in the 90-seater drive-way eatery.
“This is unlike anything we’ve done before. We want it to feel like you’re in someone’s garage house party, where you’re eating amazing food and listening to pumping tunes. It’s super casual, super crazy – and all about having a great time”.
Eggert and Whiteman first made culinary waves at Pinbone, their Jersey Road operation which earned legions of brunch-loving fans across Sydney. This was followed by a celebrated residency at 10 William Street, where their inventive twists and techniques brought a new life to the Paddington stalwart. Most recently, they turned their skill to Chinese with Good Luck Pinbone, a pop-up eatery on Anzac Parade, Kensington. Eggert and Whiteman will be joined at Mr Liquor’s Dirty Italian Disco by their front-of-house partner, Berri Eggert.
Merivale acquired the Tennyson Hotel in December 2016. The pub itself will operate as normal, with no immediate plans for a major refurbishment.
