PAPI CHULO SET TO OPEN IN MANLY
Merivale is set to launch its first restaurant in Manly when Papi Chulo opens its doors in January 2014. Located on the iconic Manly Wharf, Papi Chulo will be a smokehouse and grill dining destination led by talented Head Chefs, Patrick Friesen (Ms G’s) and Christopher Hogarth (El Loco). Dan Hong will oversee the restaurant as Executive Chef.
With a menu that breaks all the rules, Papi Chulo is a fun and fresh restaurant concept. Protein will be the food hero and cooked via three distinct techniques – a smoker that creates the pit barbeque flavour of the American Deep South, a wood grill for the perfect char and a charcoal rotisserie from Brazil. The end result is a menu designed for the individual or sharing, bursting with fantastic ingredients, simple presentation and big flavours.
Justin Hemmes, Merivale CEO, said: “Manly is a vibrant, buzzing destination with a fantastic community that draws from so many surrounding suburbs. We want to create an exciting restaurant where people can come to enjoy beautiful food, great drinks and an electric atmosphere, all while overlooking Sydney’s breathtaking harbour. This is an exciting move for Merivale and we can’t wait to be part of this world-class destination”.
Head Chefs Patrick and Christopher bring to Papi Chulo extensive experience in two of Merivale’s most revered eateries, working closely alongside culinary mastermind Dan Hong. Hailing from Canada, Patrick has led the Ms.G’s kitchen for nearly two years, bringing diners the anarchic, twisted take on Asian fusion food that they’ve come to love so much. Christopher joins Papi Chulo after donning the lead sombrero at Sydney’s favourite colourful cantina El Loco, launching the Mexican haunt at Excelsior in 2011 and Slip Inn earlier this year. He has also run the kitchen at Merivale’s multi award-winning Mr. Wong.
Papi Chulo was conceptualised by Merivale CEO, Justin Hemmes, and will be brought to life by a design team including Kelvin Ho of Akin Creative, Bettina Hemmes and Justin himself.
The opening date of Papi Chulo will be announced soon.
