Merivale Mixes it up for World Cocktail Week

09.04.2011

Merivale will lead the celebrations for the annual World Cocktail week from May 5 with a host of events and global destination themed bars, culminating on World Cocktail Day on May 13, which commemorates the anniversary of the definition of the word cocktail. This year’s World Cocktail Week will enable thirsty cocktail aficionados to sip their way around the globe while learning the art of mixing their favourite tipple.

The humble cocktail has come a long way since it was first explained in the 1806 edition of The Balance and Colombian Repository, and World Cocktail Week serves as a public recognition of the cocktail while also promoting an appreciation of the history, ongoing development as well as responsible drinking.

In addition to the internationally celebrated World Cocktail Day, Sydney’s cocktail drinkers will also be able to learn how to mix a mean drink at one of Merivale’s many cocktail classes, gain a classic appreciation at the Vintage Cocktail night, emulate the suave style of the 50s at the Gentleman’s Finishing School or simply indulge in one of the signature cocktails that will be specially created to match global destination themes at eleven Merivale venues.

The Magnificent 7 ‘Live’ cocktail mixing competition returns again this year and will see seven finalists battle it out for the coveted first place mixologist title. Guests will enjoy complimentary entry and cocktails on arrival and after the cocktail competition, The Groove Academy will take the stage and keep the party pumping into the night.
Merivale’s Group Bar Manager, Mike Enright said this initiative helps raise the bar in terms of industry education and consumer awareness of the cocktail. ‘Each year, World Cocktail Week becomes bigger and better with more events and classes on the calendar educating both the industry and the consumer, which is great. The best part is that we get to profile some of the industry’s most skilled bartenders along the way. This year’s Mag 7 live cocktail competition will really be a contest of the best of the country’s finest mixologists.’
