A STELLAR FIRST YEAR FOR MR. WONG
Merivale’s Mr. Wong has celebrated an incredible first year earning a string of highly regarded awards and accolades, including ‘Best New Restaurant’ and two hats at the 2014 Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide Awards held last night, Monday 2 September.
Since opening its doors in August last year, Mr. Wong has swiftly established a firm following amongst media, Sydney locals and travellers alike. Led by head chefs Dan Hong and Eric Koh, the 240-seater Cantonese restaurant recently won ‘New Restaurant of the Year’ in the 2014 Australian Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide Awards, ‘Best New Restaurant’ in the 2013 Time Out Sydney Food Awards and was included in The Australian’s Hot 50 Restaurant List and The Sunday Telegraph’s Top 100 Food Experiences. The ever-talented Executive Chef, Dan Hong, was also a finalist for ‘Chef of the Year’ in the 2014 Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide Awards.
Justin Hemmes said: “I have a huge amount of respect and appreciation for Dan, Eric and the entire Mr. Wong team who consistently deliver exceptional food and quality service. Mr. Wong has undoubtedly been our biggest restaurant venture to date and I’d like to thank everyone who has helped make this first year so exciting and rewarding for the team working hard to ensure its success”.
Set within the existing raw fabric of the old Tank Nightclub, Mr. Wong embodies the elegance of 1930s Shanghai, infused with a modern essence. Layered with timeless colonial furnishings such as timber floors with tiled inlay, bamboo framed French woven chairs and slow turning ceiling fans, the restaurant pays homage to classic influences from the era in a contemporary style.
Mr. Wong is one of the largest restaurants in the northern end of the Sydney CBD and offers a range of dining options from a private dining room and large group tables to intimate tables for two and seating at the open kitchen.
